State Chamber/AIA Supports Issue 1 to Expand Lottery-Funded Scholarships for Vocational and Technical Schools
The Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Arkansas (State Chamber/AIA) endorse Issue 1, a constitutional amendment proposed by the state legislature that will appear on the ballot in November. If approved by voters, Issue 1 will allow lottery proceeds to fund scholarships for Arkansas students enrolled in vocational and technical schools, expanding the current program that only supports traditional two- and four-year colleges.
“This amendment helps strengthen our workforce by providing financial assistance to students pursuing high-demand careers,” said Randy Zook, President and CEO of the State Chamber/AIA. “By expanding lottery-funded scholarships to vocational and technical students, we are addressing the critical need for professionals in technical careers like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. By supporting Issue 1, we can empower more students to pursue great opportunities in career fields that don’t require degrees and offer high earning potential, ultimately building a stronger, more resilient economy for our state.”
The Arkansas General Assembly referred Issue 1 to voters during its 2023 regular session. If passed, the constitutional change will take effect in January 2025, allowing students at both public and private nonprofit vocational-technical schools to benefit from lottery-funded scholarships.
